In a tough jobs market....

Posted on 25 Nov 2009

In a tough jobs market, how do you make your applications stand out? An outstanding CV, winning cover letter, and accomplished interview techniques are crucial to helping you get the job you're after. But there's plenty more you can do to get an edge in the job hunt. We’ve put together a few tips on how to stand out and get noticed in your job search.

Within the body of this blog we’ve also included a twist with several links to Tradespace business owners that demonstrate, despite our current economic climate, how savvy networking brings you increased opportunities.

To begin with, here are 6 job-hunting tips.

1. Follow up

Recruiters can receive hundreds of CVs and cover letters everyday, so it's important you follow up each application with a call to make sure it's been received and to introduce yourself.

2. Be professional

It may sound obvious, but when you submit your applications online, always use a professional looking email address. Avoid using the comedy one you set up; create an email account using your first name and last name, something like: firstname.lastname@email.com.

3. Accuracy is key

Spelling mistakes or typos in your CV, cover letter or any email correspondence with the employer must be avoided at all cost. Mistakes can really put an employer off and show a lack of attention to detail.

4. Interview day

It might sound obvious, but allow plenty of time to get to your interview. Nothing kills your chances of getting the job like being late. Plan the route and, if you have time, undertake a practice run, so you know exactly where you're going.

5. It's better to be overdressed

Always dress smartly to an interview and wear a suit unless specifically told otherwise. If you're not sure what to wear, a suit is always the best option. It's always better to be overdressed than underdressed and looking the part will help set the right impression.

Sarah’s team at Arrow Light Haulage know the importance of timely arrival. Sarah also knows the success networking can bring, she’s also very supportive of other Tradespace owners. Essex Emergency will vouch for that, I’m sure.

6. Keeping your skills up to date

Regularly learning new ones helps maintain employability and is therefore key to a successful career. Whatever your professional situation, learning is always a smart career move.

So, to help you decide whether now is the time to study, here are some additional tips:

Charles at: clear as crystal is an excellent example of how to succeed with a new career change and comes highly recommended.

Unemployed professionals: if you're looking for your next job, keeping your skills up to date will help maintain employability and gain a competitive edge. Simon at Curved Vision is an expert at teaching effective interview presentation skills.

So, if you feel learning can improve your career prospects, why not consider home study programmes, online courses, IT certifications and short training courses, and find the course that'll help you fulfil your career aspirations.
